The Chinese New Year celebration, also known as the Spring Festival, was celebrated on Saturday, 25th January. Each New Year is represented by one of 12 different animals. This year, we will welcome the Year of the Rat, which is the first sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle.

In the PYP, we held a special assembly to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Thursday, 23rd January 23rd in Ciputra Hall. Our students participated in a range of Chinese cultural performances. To open the assembly, a traditional Chinese instrument, a Guzheng, was played by Liang Chun Xin from PYP 3A together with the Chinese drums played by some members from PYP 4, 5 and 6. The celebration continued with an uplifting performance of the Barongsai led by Mr. Dendy.

After the Barongsai performance, PYP 1 and 2 students performed a Chinese dance followed by a Chinese New Year quiz led by the Mandarin teachers, with prizes given to the students who got the correct answers. Our school’s choir sang a Mandarin song beautifully “Tong yi shou ge” which helped make the assembly even more memorable.

Under the Mandarin teacher’s guidance, some of PYP 3, 4 and 5 students recited a Tang poem. This performance also showed to everyone that learning poems is a great way to practice many different tone combinations. As a special performance, we also invited last year’s dance competition winner “The Cute Dancers” to present a wonderful dance performance. The assembly finished with all audience singing together “Gong Xi Gong Xi” to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.

Our Chinese New Year celebrations were wonderful. Thanks to all of the students for showing great enthusiasm during the day and all teachers and staff for their efforts in making the day fun and educational for our students.
