What is WASC?

What is the WASC/IBO combined visit all about?

On the 12th to the 15th October 2020 Sekolah Ciputra successfully hosted accreditation and reauthorisation visits from the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).   This confirmed as an IB Continuum School with full WASC accreditation.

There are very few schools world-wide that are IBO Continuum. This means students get the opportunity of studying the IB from the age of three right through to graduation. Sekolah Ciputra teaches the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme, (IBDP).  Recently, the Indonesian Government ranked all the international education providers, awarding the IB programme first place.

The visits are part of a five yearly cycle to ensure that our structure and systems best support student learning.  It is wonderful to have this type of feedback as it helps us to plan for the future.  Although we are a successful and mature IB school, we know there is always room to improve. We use the philosophy that we expect from our students, which is to reflect upon our work and think critically with a view to building a cycle of continuous improvement. The visits may only be every four years, but we are constantly involved with the IBO through workshops, seminars and meetings.

The WASC visit had a wider focus. We were evaluated on our school administration, building, finances, health and safety and child protection to name a few

Apart from quality assurance, helping us to ensure that all our school systems are in keeping with international best practice, our WASC accreditation has a number of other significant benefits:

  • It raises the status of our graduation certificate allowing graduates direct entry to a number of US colleges.
  • It gives us access to a wide range of staff professional development opportunities.
  • It assists with the recruitment of expatriate staff who have a clear preference for working in accredited schools because of the high standard required for accreditation.
  • It provides a template for school planning and improvement.
  • It requires high quality consultation with all stakeholders.
