International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (Playgroup – Grade 6)
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), with the inclusion of Indonesian national characteristics, as regulated by the Indonesian Government, provides an educational framework for the Primary School. The Vision and Mission of Sekolah Ciputra work hand in hand with the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate to enhance and support a well-rounded 21st Century education for students.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an inquiry based programme, designed to support each student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be an active, independent learner for life. It focuses on the growth of the developing child, encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. The key goal of the programme is to support all students to become internationally minded, global citizens.
The transdisciplinary nature of the PYP curriculum supports the integration of subjects into Units of Inquiry. There are six Units of Inquiry, four of which are completed by Playgroup B, five by PYP A. PYP B – PYP 6 are expected to complete all six in the course of the school year. The IB PYP curriculum places the student at the centre and provides opportunities for learning in Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and the Arts to occur in a holistic and connected way.
English is the language of classroom instruction and in order for students to be admitted to the programme, age-appropriate levels of proficiency in English are required. In some instances students may receive additional support in English language development. Bahasa Indonesia forms part of the core curriculum and Mandarin is offered to students as an additional language.
Qualified native English speaking expatriate teachers work alongside IB trained Indonesian teachers to plan, teach and assess students all areas of instruction, except for Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin, Religion and the Arts.
Student assessment is varied and continuous to meet the needs of each component of the programme. Students meet the requirements established by the National Ministry of Education as well as those set by the IBO. A Graduation Certificate from the Indonesian Ministry of Education is presented to PYP 6 students who meet these requirements.
In Grade 6 students carry out an extended inquiry project, known as the PYP Exhibition, under the guidance of their teachers. It provides an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the Learner Profile that they have been developing throughout the PYP. The exhibition is an opportunity to identify, explore and take action related to a chosen area of interest and importance to students. It is a culminating experience marking the transition from the Primary Years Programme to the Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Parents, as partners in the learning process, are always welcome at the school. Open and ongoing communication between home and school is encouraged and information sessions are offered to parents to ensure shared understandings of our joint role in educating students. The reporting system involves parents and includes two parent-student-teacher conferences, home student-led conferences and written reports at the conclusion of each semester.
The programme of inquiry is organised and framed by six transdisciplinary themes:
- Who we are.
- Where we are in place and time.
- How we express ourselves.
- How the world works.
- How we organise ourselves.
- Sharing the planet.
Assessment is done on an ongoing basis using a series of observations, tests, projects, quizzes, visual representations, artistic and athletic performances and oral presentations.
Field trips, guest speakers and overnight camp experiences are some examples of students learning outside the classroom. A wide range of extra-curricular activities (ECA) are offered by staff as well as external providers in order for students to pursue their interests and passions.
