“The teachers left a lasting impression on me through their high standards of learning, both inside and outside the classroom.”
JAMES MULIAWAN BUDILARTO
GRADUATED: 2020
I spent nine years studying at Sekolah Ciputra, from PYP 4 through to Grade 12. After graduating, I decided to move to New Zealand to study Plant Protection and Pathology at Lincoln University, where I conducted research on plant–fungal interactions in the context of sustainable agriculture. I am now embarking on my PhD journey in Melbourne, Australia, with Agriculture Victoria and La Trobe University, where I will be focusing on insect–fungal interactions.
Sekolah Ciputra has contributed greatly to who I am today. In particular, the IB programme shaped the way I view the world and encouraged me to approach problems from different perspectives. The IB Learner Profile has been particularly beneficial in shaping how I think about contributing to the world through my own goals, interests, and curiosity. The teachers also left a lasting impression on me through their high standards of learning, both inside and outside the classroom. More importantly, they planted the seeds of curiosity that encouraged me to keep learning and growing.
One of my most memorable experiences at Sekolah Ciputra goes all the way back to Grade 5. I had an amazing teacher, Ms. Tantri, who was a role model in the way she led our class. I remember one occasion when she asked us to bring plants to school, and we had a meditation session together after studying. We also learnt about the Age of Exploration and read stories about the explorers of that era, which is something I remain very fond of to this day. Looking back, experiences like these helped nurture my curiosity about the world and encouraged me to explore beyond what was immediately in front of me.
To the graduating students: follow where your heart takes you. If you find something you genuinely enjoy, allow yourself to pursue it and experience it for yourself rather than following the expectations of others. Failure and mistakes can be intimidating, but they are an important part of the learning process. So keep exploring, stay curious, and do not be afraid to take risks.
I would recommend Sekolah Ciputra to others because of its robust curriculum and the quality of its teachers, who are highly qualified and professional. It provides students with opportunities to discover their passions and interests while preparing them to navigate an increasingly global world. Most importantly, I believe it encourages students not only to pursue their own goals, but also to think about how they can contribute to their communities and the wider world.
