News from the Executive Principal’s Desk

Dear parents, students, teachers and alumni of Sekolah Ciputra,

First of all I want to send out a huge congratulations to both the Senior Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Teams for their wins last night in the DBL Tournament. For the second game in a row the Girls’ Team were able to battle back for a last second win, leading to an increase in grey hairs and heart palpitations for those of us in the audience in the 40+ age range. Thankfully the Boys Team was able to handle their game more comfortably and we were able to leave the arena on our own instead of with medical assistance!

On Monday the PYP Sports League will continue with 3v3 basketball, and after school we will have the ICAS English Assessment take place. Tuesday will see our Junior Girls’ Basketball team play their first DBL game of the year at 11:00 a.m., while our Senior Girls’ Team will play their next game at 13:00.  Both games will be against Nation Star Academy, so please send positive vibes if you are not going along to support them in person. The PYP 1 students will also go out to explore Surabaya on their grade level outing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wednesday morning will bring the HS Athletics Day from 8:00-10:00. Throughout the week there will be students from both inside and outside of school coming to take our scholarship tests. This includes athletics scholarship tryouts on Friday and Saturday as well as academic tests the other days. So if you see anyone that looks lost, please stop to speak with them and help them find what they need.

On Friday our Senior Boys’ Basketball Team will play their next game against SMAN 9 at 18:30, so go along and cheer them on if possible. Finally, we will have the Singapore Mathematics Challenge on Saturday.  

This week I wanted to take a break from the “academic articles” focus, and spend a minute reflecting on students’ voices. This is an article written by an 8th grade student at the International School of Yangon, and I thought it was nice to hear from her that “It’s ok to not know yet…”  Last week we had our Continuum SLT Meeting with the STUCO and OSIS student leaders, and I asked them to reflect on our School’s Guiding Statements as we discussed what to keep, what to change and what to get rid of moving into our next Strategic Plan.  

It was nice to listen to what they appreciate about the school, and I was struck by OSIS Captain Bianca’s comment that she recently told her mom she appreciated how students do not just learn content for the sake of learning it, but that we teach them information and how to apply it in the real world. This perfectly illustrates our current School Motto: “We learn not for school, but for life.”  Students can be quite wise, and we should take a moment to ask them their thoughts and listen to their responses to help keep ourselves grounded.
